Why Havening and Nonviolent Communication Work So Beautifully Together
My Story
My journey into personal growth began with a deep dive into Nonviolent Communication (NVC). I immersed myself in everything I could find: the Foundation courses, mediation training, intermediate programmes, body awareness, deepening NVC, and countless practice groups. There was always another layer to discover.
As I learned to identify my feelings, understand my needs, and communicate with greater compassion, something profound began to shift. My awareness grew, my relationships changed, and I experienced more choice in how I responded to life.
Then I found Havening.
It felt like the missing piece—the icing on the cake.
What is Nonviolent Communication?
At its heart, NVC is about understanding ourselves and others with compassion.
It teaches us to move beyond blame and judgement by recognising that every feeling is pointing towards a universal human need. When we understand the need beneath our emotions, we become less reactive and more intentional. Instead of asking, "Who's to blame?" we begin asking, "What matters here, and how can this need be met?"
This shift opens the door to greater connection, creativity, and freedom.
What is Havening?
Havening is a gentle psychosensory approach that uses soothing touch, together with focused attention, to help calm the nervous system.
The comforting touch activates specialised nerve fibres in the skin, encouraging the brain to enter a calmer state and promoting the release of soothing neurochemicals such as oxytocin and serotonin. As the nervous system settles, the brain can reduce the emotional intensity attached to distressing memories and well-worn emotional patterns, allowing new, healthier responses to develop.
Rather than repeatedly reliving difficult experiences, Havening helps the brain experience greater safety, making lasting change feel more achievable.
Why They Work So Well Together
For me, NVC and Havening are a powerful partnership.
NVC gives us the map. It helps us understand what we are feeling, uncover the deeper needs beneath those feelings, and discover supportive ways to meet them.
Havening helps those insights become embodied.
When the nervous system feels safe, we are far more able to receive new perspectives and let go of old protective patterns. We move beyond simply understanding our needs intellectually—we begin to feel them, trust them, and live from them.
Together they create a pathway to Regulate → Reflect → Respond.
First we regulate the nervous system. Then we reflect on our feelings and needs. Finally, we respond with strategies that support both ourselves and the people around us.
Get Started at Home
Lasting change isn't created by one breakthrough—it grows through gentle, consistent practice.
Even a few minutes each day of Havening, combined with reflecting on your feelings and the needs beneath them, can begin creating new neural pathways. Over time, the messages of self-compassion, safety, and connection become more familiar, and new ways of responding begin to feel natural.
This is where awareness becomes embodiment, and understanding becomes lasting change.
